awareness about Sarcoma Cancer and life beyond cancer treatment

Mumbai, 30th July 2022: This Sarcoma Awareness Month, Apollo Cancer Centres, India’s best cancer hospitals, hosted ‘Winners on Wheels’ cyclothon to spread awareness about Sarcoma cancer. This initiative was aimed to create awareness and encourage positivity about cancer treatment for a better quality of life. To shed light on how a well-treated cancer patient can lead a successful life, people volunteered to participate in the cyclothon as Apollo’s brand ambassador. Regional Cyclothons across 5 cities – Bangalore, Hyderabad, New Delhi, and Chennai are also being conducted to create awareness about Sarcoma Cancer & its symptoms.

The event was flagged off by the clinicians from Oncology team of Apollo Cancer Centres. The doctors, medical staff – Mr. Santosh Marathe, Regional CEO – Western Region, Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai, Dr. Anil D’Cruz, Director – Oncology Services, Apollo Cancer Centres and Dr. Mishil Parikh, Consultant, Orthopedic Oncology, Apollo Cancer Centres, were present for the event. Cyclists from “Everest Cycling Culture” and children from local schools took part in this activity.

Sarcoma is one of the cancers which affects the soft tissues or bone. Bone Sarcomas constitute as the third most common cause of mortality in adolescents. In addition to raising awareness around Sarcoma cancer, the cyclothon also promoted the need for a healthy lifestyle to ensure a future with less cancer risk. The gathering discussed the primary topic of reasoning on the forgotten disease.

On the occasion, Mr. Santosh Marathe, Regional CEO – Western Region, Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai said, “The sole purpose of the cyclothon is to increase awareness among those unaware and emphasize the fact that there is life after cancer. Apollo Cancer Centres has been at the forefront introducing the most advanced, contemporary cancer care diagnostics and treatments. We have a comprehensive treatment planning system involving Tumour Board & organ specific consultants, to provide personalized care catering to the needs of the patients.”

Dr. Anil D’Cruz, Director – Oncology Services, Apollo Cancer Centres, said, “Sarcoma are relatively rare cancers and arise from the bones (bone sarcomas) or connective tissues (soft tissue sarcomas). Soft tissue sarcomas occur in the muscle, fat, tendons, nerves, blood vessels, joint lining of our body. They occur at all ages and in any location within the body. Raising awareness and early diagnosis are important as often these present as innocuous swellings and are ignored. Surgery is the prime modality of treatment and therefore the larger the tumor the more the associated loss of function.”

Commenting on the initiative, Dr. Mishil Parikh, Consultant, Orthopedic Oncosurgeon, Apollo Cancer Centres said, “Bone Cancer is a rare but dreaded disease. When this sarcoma strikes, patients suffer from restrictions in movement. After successful treatment these bones are replaced, and limbs are reconstructed. It is a very satisfying sight when these patients return to normal activity but it’s even more rewarding when they can do things that were deemed impossible by people & you can take some credit for it.”

Sharing her perspective, Ms. Astha Panchamiya, the sarcoma survivor said “I am really excited for this event. I am glad Apollo Hospitals has organized this event in the Sarcoma Awareness Month to spread awareness about it. Being a survivor myself I can understand the severity about being a sarcoma patient. I would give my wishes to all the ones going through the treatment and my healthy regards to everyone who have recovered.”
